Does Shutterstock accept AI images?
No. Shutterstock's contributor policy page for AI-generated content opens with one sentence: “Shutterstock does not accept AI-generated content from our contributors.” The page was last updated on July 16, 2025 and was still in force when we read it on October 4, 2026.
Its contributor FAQ repeats the rule in other words: “Shutterstock will not allow AI-generated content to be submitted by contributors for licensing on our platform.” That is a ban on selling AI images as a contributor, not a request to label them.
Shutterstock gives two reasons. Contributors cannot prove they own the intellectual property of AI-generated content, because AI models draw on the work of many artists. And Shutterstock cannot verify which AI model produced an image, so it could not make sure every contributing artist is paid.
What about AI tools inside Shutterstock?
Shutterstock does offer AI editing features to its customers. According to its contributor FAQ, a customer can modify a contributor's original content with AI tools on the platform, for example to extend an image. Those edits are available only to the customer who downloads them and are not added to the library, and the royalties go to the original artist.
That is the opposite of what a contributor wants when selling AI art: your own AI image still cannot be submitted. Do not read this exception as a loophole.
What does Shutterstock require for the non-AI content it accepts?
If you also sell real photos or illustrations you made yourself, these are the technical rules from Shutterstock's help pages. They don't apply to AI images, which it does not take.
| Requirement | What Shutterstock says | Source date |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | “All images must be at least 4 MP (megapixels) or larger”, with the highest quality settings | Updated Feb 18, 2026 |
| File size | Up to 50 MB for photos uploaded in the browser, and up to 50 MB for JPEGs by FTPS | Updated Feb 18, 2026 |
| Formats | JPEG (recommended; every image is converted to JPEG on approval), TIFF without layers and EPS. PSD files are not accepted | Updated Feb 18, 2026 |
| Colour | Convert to sRGB before uploading, because images are offered in sRGB | Updated Feb 18, 2026 |
| Upscaling | “Do not upsize/upscale or stretch a JPEG image beyond its original size” | Updated Apr 22, 2025 |
| Pixelation | Described as “an effect typically caused by upscaling”, which is a quality reason to reject | Updated Apr 22, 2025 |
| Noise reduction | Use it sparingly: too much “can cause loss of edge detail” | Updated Apr 22, 2025 |

Can I upscale images for Shutterstock?
Not a JPEG beyond its original size. Shutterstock's quality page says: “Do not upsize/upscale or stretch a JPEG image beyond its original size.” If your real photo already has 4 MP or more, upload it as it is.
That rule is different from Adobe Stock and 123RF, which allow upscaling as long as the result has no artifacts. If you use an upscaler for those two, keep the Shutterstock version as the untouched original.
Where can I sell AI images instead of Shutterstock?
Three stock sites accept AI images today, each with its own label and limits. The full comparison is in stock sites that accept AI images.
- 1Adobe Stock: the main optionIt accepts generative AI content with the “Created using generative AI tools” checkbox, a limit of three iterations of similar assets and a 4 MP minimum. Read Adobe Stock's AI requirements before your first batch.
- 2Freepik (Magnific Contributor)It accepts AI resources tagged with the AI button or “_ai_generated” in the CSV. Details in selling AI images on Freepik.
- 3123RFIt takes AI images in its “AI Generated Images” category only, with a 6 MP minimum. Details in selling AI images on 123RF.
- 4Keep Shutterstock for real workIf you shoot photos or draw your own illustrations, Shutterstock is still an option for that work. For the comparison from a contributor's point of view, see Adobe Stock vs Shutterstock.
How Stock Creatives helps with the sites that do accept AI
Stock Creatives is our own app for contributors who sell AI images. It generates the image, upscales it with our own upscaler to 2x, 3x or up to 4x, writes a title of up to 70 characters and up to 49 keywords, and uploads the finished images, with title and keywords inside, to your Adobe Stock contributor account. You then submit them for review in Adobe's portal. If you prefer to upload by hand, it also gives you the Adobe Stock CSV.
It is built for Adobe Stock, not for Shutterstock. See how it works with Adobe Stock minimum resolution and our AI image upscaler, and see plans on the pricing page.
- Automatic check for hands, text and logos
- Title, keywords and CSV don't use credits
- Real SVG vectors that never need upscaling

Our own upscaler, up to 4x, built in-house for stock
Stock Creatives has its own upscaling technology, built for stock images: it adds real detail instead of just stretching pixels, and its Faithful mode keeps hands, faces and text in shape.
Choose 2x, 3x or up to 4x. For example, a 1500 × 1000 px photo (1.5 MP, under Adobe's 4 MP minimum) comes out at 4500 × 3000 px (13.5 MP) at 3x, or 6000 × 4000 px (24 MP) at 4x. Upscaling uses credits by scale (a 4x costs twice as much as a 2x), for the images you make in the app and for your own files.
- Our own technology, not a third-party upscaler
- Faithful mode: real detail, with hands and faces intact
- 2x, 3x or 4x: you choose, one upscale each

1.5 MP · under Adobe's 4 MP minimum

13.5 MP · 9x the pixels, well above 4 MP
Or at 4x: 6000 × 4000 px · 24 MP
Frequently asked questions
Does Shutterstock accept AI images?+
No. Shutterstock's policy says: “Shutterstock does not accept AI-generated content from our contributors.” We read it on October 4, 2026, and the page was last updated on July 16, 2025.
Can I sell AI-generated art on Shutterstock?+
No, not as a contributor. Shutterstock does not let contributors submit AI-generated content for licensing. AI art can be sold on Adobe Stock, Freepik/Magnific and 123RF under their own labels and limits.
Why does Shutterstock not accept AI-generated content?+
Because contributors cannot prove they own the IP of AI-generated content, and Shutterstock cannot verify which AI model made it, so it could not make sure all contributing artists are paid. Those are the reasons on its own policy page.
What is Shutterstock's minimum image size?+
4 megapixels. Shutterstock says all images must be at least 4 MP, in JPEG (recommended), TIFF or EPS, with a maximum of 50 MB for photos uploaded in the browser. This applies to the non-AI content it accepts.
Can I upscale a JPEG before uploading to Shutterstock?+
Not beyond its original size. Shutterstock's quality page says not to upsize, upscale or stretch a JPEG beyond its original size, and describes pixelation as an effect typically caused by upscaling.
Where can I sell AI images instead?+
Adobe Stock, Freepik (Magnific Contributor) and 123RF accept AI images with a label. Dreamstime accepted them under conditions in 2023; see selling AI images on Dreamstime for what we could confirm.
Is Shutterstock better than Adobe Stock for contributors?+
It depends on what you sell. For AI images the question is closed, because Shutterstock does not take them. For real photos and illustrations, compare both in Adobe Stock vs Shutterstock.
Can I try Stock Creatives before paying?+
Yes. Sign up and confirm your email to get 2 images and 2 upscales to try. No card is needed.
