How to upscale an image to 4K: the exact size and factor

Upscaling an image to 4K means reaching at least 3840 × 2160 pixels (8.3 megapixels). A 1536 × 1024 image gets there at 3x (4608 × 3072), a 1920 × 1080 one at 2x, and a 1024 × 1024 one only at 4x. Stock Creatives upscales 2x, 3x or 4x.

What does “4K” mean in pixels and megapixels?

“4K” is a width of about 4000 pixels. The consumer standard, 4K UHD, is 3840 × 2160 pixels, which is 8,294,400 pixels or 8.3 megapixels (MP). Cinema's DCI 4K is 4096 × 2160, or 8.8 MP. Both figures come from the 4K resolution reference (consulted October 4, 2026).

That gives you two ways to read “upscale to 4K”. If you need a 3840-pixel-wide frame (a video, a screen wallpaper, a presentation), the width is what counts. If you only need 4K's pixel count (about 8.3 MP) because a site asks for megapixels, as stock sites do, the shape of the image matters less: a square 3072 × 3072 image already holds 9.4 MP.

How much do I need to upscale to reach 4K?

Divide 3840 by the width of your image to get the factor. Because the upscale factor applies to both sides, the pixel count grows by its square: 2x gives 4 times the pixels, 3x gives 9 times, 4x gives 16 times.

Your imageFactor to reach 3840 px wideNext whole factorResult

1024 × 1024 (1.0 MP)3.75x4x4096 × 4096 (16.8 MP)

A 1024 × 1024 image at 3x is 3072 × 3072 (9.4 MP): not 3840 pixels wide, but more pixels than a 4K UHD frame. Which one you need depends on whether you want the width or the megapixels.

2x, 3x and 4x examples from the most common AI sizes

Most AI generators output between 1 and 4 MP. These are exact results, with the pixel count in megapixels:

Original2x3x4x
1024 × 1024 (1.0 MP)2048 × 2048 (4.2 MP)3072 × 3072 (9.4 MP)4096 × 4096 (16.8 MP)
1536 × 1024 (1.6 MP)3072 × 2048 (6.3 MP)4608 × 3072 (14.2 MP)6144 × 4096 (25.2 MP)
2048 × 2048 (4.2 MP)4096 × 4096 (16.8 MP)6144 × 6144 (37.7 MP)8192 × 8192 (67.1 MP)

Adobe Stock's maximum is 100 MP, so none of these exceed it. Fitting under a limit is not the same as looking good at that size: see the next section.

How far can you upscale before quality drops?

An AI upscaler doesn't recover detail that was never captured: it creates new pixels that look plausible. At 3x, 8 of every 9 pixels in the result are new. At 4x, 15 of every 16 are. That works well on skin, fabric and foliage, and badly on text, logos and fine patterns, which can be redrawn into something different.

In practice the safe factor depends on the source. A sharp 1536 × 1024 image usually holds up at 3x. A soft or noisy 1 MP image at 4x tends to show painted textures or halos at 100% zoom. Always review the result at full size, and prefer the smallest factor that reaches your target.

A 4K target is also a ceiling worth respecting: 8K (7680 × 4320) is 33.2 MP, four times the pixels of 4K, and in almost every case it just shows the flaws bigger. For the settings that keep an upscale clean, read our guide to advanced AI image upscaling.

Upscaling to 4K for stock sites: what Adobe Stock asks

Adobe Stock's official size range is 4 to 100 MP, up to 45 MB per file, as a JPEG in sRGB (consulted October 2, 2026). A 4K UHD image is 8.3 MP, comfortably inside that range. Adobe's generative AI FAQ adds the rule that matters: “Don't increase resolution in ways that degrade quality.”

So for stock the goal is not “as big as possible” but enough megapixels to clear 4 MP after a crop, without visible damage. A prudent target for AI images is roughly 6–16 MP, which is where 4K sits. We explain the numbers in Adobe Stock minimum resolution and the step-by-step process in how to upscale an image for Adobe Stock.

Why Stock Creatives instead of a generic 4K upscaler

Stock Creatives is our product, so weigh this accordingly. It upscales to 2x, 3x or 4x with its own engine on cloud GPUs, so the graphics card in your computer doesn't matter. Each result is checked for 4–100 MP, 45 MB, sharpening halos and artificial noise.

If the image is going to a stock site, the title (up to 70 characters), up to 49 keywords and the Adobe Stock CSV come with it at no extra credit cost. Upscaling uses credits by scale (4x costs twice as much as 2x); see pricing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I upscale an image to 4K?+

Upload it to an AI upscaler and choose the factor that takes its width to at least 3840 pixels: 2x from 1920 px, 3x from 1536 px, 4x from 1024 px. Then review the result at 100%. Stock Creatives offers 2x, 3x and 4x.

What is 4K resolution in pixels?+

4K UHD is 3840 × 2160 pixels, or 8,294,400 pixels. DCI 4K, used in cinema, is 4096 × 2160 pixels (8,847,360).

How many megapixels is 4K?+

About 8.3 MP for 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) and 8.8 MP for DCI 4K (4096 × 2160). Multiply width by height and divide by one million.

Can I upscale a 1024 × 1024 image to 4K?+

Yes, at 4x it becomes 4096 × 4096 (16.8 MP), wider than a 4K frame. At 3x it is 3072 × 3072 (9.4 MP): more pixels than 4K UHD, but not 3840 wide. Check the result at 100% because 4x adds a lot of invented detail.

Is a 4K image enough for Adobe Stock?+

Size-wise, yes: 8.3 MP is well above Adobe's 4 MP minimum. Acceptance still depends on quality, content and similarity, and nobody can guarantee it. See Adobe Stock minimum resolution.

Does upscaling to 4K lose quality?+

It can. An upscale invents detail, so the larger the factor and the softer the source, the more likely halos, painted textures or altered details. A faithful mode and a review at 100% reduce the risk.

Is a 4x upscale the same as 4K?+

No. 4x means four times the width and height of your original, which is 16 times the pixels. It reaches 4K only if the original is about 960 px wide or more. A 4x upscale of a 1024-wide image is 4096 wide.

Can I try the upscaler for free?+

Yes. Confirm your email to get 2 images and 2 upscales to try, with no card. After the trial, upscales come with the monthly plans.
