Best AI image upscaler in 2026: an honest comparison
There's no single best AI image upscaler: there's the best one for what you upscale and where it goes next. If you sell AI images on stock sites, compare the finished image: €49 a month gets you 200 High images already upscaled 3x. At Magnific, €36 buys 46 upscales and no images.
- Ten tools, one table
- What Adobe Stock actually asks of an upscale
- 4 High images + 4 upscales to try
Magnific figures are upscale-only (the images must be generated elsewhere) and were checked on Oct 4, 2026. Other prices were seen on Oct 3, 2026: see the sources at the bottom of the page.

Four kinds of AI upscalers
Most "best AI for image upscaling" threads mix tools that do very different things. They fall into four groups:
- Free and open source: desktop apps that run on your own computer. No subscription, but the speed depends on your graphics card.
- Paid desktop apps: local processing with more polish and batch features, paid up front or by subscription.
- Web upscalers: upload in the browser and download the result. Usually a free tier with limits, then credits or a monthly plan.
- Creative upscalers: they invent new micro-detail, guided by a prompt and sliders. Striking on art, risky when every hand and letter has to stay intact.

Who each upscaler is for
- Stock Creatives: you sell AI images on Adobe Stock and want generation, a 3x upscale, a title, keywords and the CSV in one workflow. Not the cheapest choice if you only need the occasional upscale.
- Upscayl: you want free and offline, you have a decent graphics card and you'll handle titles and keywords elsewhere.
- Bigjpg: you mostly enlarge illustrations or anime-style art in the browser.
- Topaz Gigapixel: you're a photographer with a powerful computer who prefers desktop software and works in big batches.
- Upscale.media: you need a quick upscale in the browser with no setup.
- Magnific: you want the upscaler to reimagine detail, for concept art, posters or portfolio pieces. For stock, that reinvention needs a careful review.
- Let's Enhance: you upscale photos in the browser and like paying by credits.
- Krea: you already use Krea's creative tools and want upscaling in the same place.
- Clarity: you want a creative upscaler with control over how much it changes.
- Pixelbin: your team needs upscaling alongside other image-editing tools.
Best free AI image upscaler online in 2026 (and what Reddit threads skip)
If you searched for the best free AI image upscaler on Reddit, you've probably seen two kinds of answers: free desktop apps and free tiers of web tools. Both are fine for a few images. The catch is the use case: a free tier usually limits size, count or watermark-free downloads, and a free desktop app needs a graphics card that can keep up.
When you read a recommendation, ask what the person upscales (photos, anime art, AI images), where the result goes (screen, print, a stock site) and whether they checked it at 100% zoom. A tool that looks great on a phone screen can still fail a stock reviewer's check.
Stock Creatives isn't free beyond the trial. It's worth paying for if you sell on stock sites, because the upscale arrives with the title, keywords and CSV ready, and the quality check looks for the same problems reviewers reject.
Upscaling for Adobe Stock: what Adobe actually asks
Adobe Stock accepts generative AI images that meet its normal standards. On resolution and upscaling, this is what its contributor pages say (consulted on October 2, 2026):
- Size: 4 MP minimum and 100 MP maximum, up to 45 MB per file.
- Format: JPEG with an sRGB color profile. Illustrations are JPEG only; PNG is a separate content type that needs a transparent background.
- Upscaling is allowed, degrading quality isn't: the generative AI FAQ says "Don't increase resolution in ways that degrade quality."
- Refusal reasons linked to upscaling: soft or out-of-focus images, "heavily edited or over-sharpened" photos, pixelated elements or jagged edges in illustrations, artifacts and noise from over-editing, colored halos, and unrealistic skin smoothing.
- Check at 100% zoom: Adobe tells contributors to review images at full size before submitting.
- A dated tip: Adobe's 2023 PDF guide for AI images suggested upscaling to meet the 4 MP minimum "but don't go beyond 6 to 8 megapixels". The 2026 technical pages allow up to 100 MP and don't repeat that cap, so treat it as advice, not a current rule.
The comparison that matters for stock sellers
A stock contributor doesn't buy upscales, they buy finished images. Magnific's plans give 46 upscales for €36 and 112 for €88; those are upscale-only figures, and the images must be generated somewhere else first. Stock Creatives puts both jobs in one plan: €49 a month gives you 200 images generated in High quality and upscaled 3x.
Magnific is a strong creative upscaler and does more than this comparison covers. We only compare the job a stock contributor repeats every month.

The upscale is only half the job
After upscaling, a stock image still needs a title, keywords and a file the site will take. With most tools on this page, that's another tool and another subscription.
In Stock Creatives, the title (up to 70 characters), up to 49 keywords and the Adobe Stock CSV come with the upscale and don't use credits.
- Faithful 3x by default, sRGB JPEG
- Quality check on every result
- You upload the files; the CSV fills in the metadata

Where our upscaler fits, and where it doesn't
Stock Creatives is for people who sell AI images, above all on Adobe Stock. Its upscaler runs 3x by default in Faithful mode, which adds detail without reinventing hands, faces or text, and every result goes through a quality check for megapixels, file size, halos and noise. You can upscale images generated in the app or your own Midjourney files, and each upscale uses 1 from your plan's allowance (see plans).
It's not the right tool if you want a free, offline upscaler, if you print large photographs from a camera, or if you want an upscaler to reinvent an image artistically. For those, look at the free, desktop or creative tools above. To see what our upscaler does, read the AI image upscaler page; for a tool-by-tool look, see alternatives to Nero, Magnific, Topaz and Photoshop.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI image upscaler in 2026?+
It depends on the job. For free and offline, an open-source desktop app; for photographers with a strong computer, a paid desktop app; for artistic reinvention, a creative upscaler; for AI images headed to Adobe Stock, a tool that keeps detail faithful and outputs sRGB JPEGs, which is what Stock Creatives does.
What is the best free AI image upscaler?+
Free open-source desktop apps cost nothing but need a capable graphics card. Web tools have free tiers with limits. Stock Creatives has a free trial when you confirm your email, then upscales come with paid plans.
Can I use a creative upscaler for stock images?+
You can, but review every image at 100%. Creative upscalers invent detail, and Adobe Stock refuses anatomical errors, distorted results and render artifacts. A faithful upscale is the safer default.
How many megapixels should an upscaled stock image have?+
At least 4 MP for Adobe Stock, with a 100 MP maximum. A moderate target (roughly 6–16 MP for AI images) leaves room for crops without stretching the image too far. Our advanced upscaling guide explains the trade-offs.
Are the competitor prices on this page up to date?+
