How to upscale an image for Adobe Stock so it passes review
To upscale an image for Adobe Stock, take it above the 4 MP minimum, aim for roughly 6–16 MP and check it at 100% for halos, noise and artifacts. A 1500 × 1000 image at 3x becomes 4500 × 3000 (13.5 MP). Adobe's rule: “Don't increase resolution in ways that degrade quality.”

Does Adobe Stock allow upscaled images?
Yes. Adobe Stock doesn't forbid upscaling images; it refuses quality loss. Its generative AI FAQ says: “Generative AI content must meet existing visual and technical quality standards… Don't increase resolution in ways that degrade quality.” Its photo requirements add: “Resize your photos accurately to maintain clarity and detail.”
The same pages say that files that are too small or excessively compressed may be refused. That is the balance to strike: enough pixels to pass, without the damage a bad upscale adds. (Upscaled videos, such as HD to 4K, are a different case: Adobe rejects them.)
What does Adobe Stock require for the file?
| Requirement | Adobe Stock | What it means for your upscale |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 4 MP minimum, 100 MP maximum | Clear 4 MP even after a crop; you don't need to approach 100 MP |
| File size | 45 MB maximum | A high-quality JPEG of 9–14 MP is well inside it |
| Format | Photos: JPEG with an sRGB profile. Illustrations: JPEG only. PNG only as its own type, with a transparent background | Export sRGB JPEG; convert Adobe RGB or Display P3 first |
| Compression | No number given; “excessively compressed” files may be refused | Don't save at low JPEG quality to shrink the file |
| AI label | “Created using generative AI tools” is required for all generative AI content | Tick it when you submit; see Adobe Stock AI requirements |

How do I upscale an AI image for Adobe Stock, step by step?
- 1Fix the original firstAn upscaler makes everything sharper, mistakes included. Check hands, eyes, text and anything that looks like a logo, and fix or regenerate before upscaling.
- 2Pick the factor from the megapixelsMost AI images are 1–2 MP. Choose the smallest factor that lands at roughly 6–16 MP. For a 1500 × 1000 image, 3x gives 13.5 MP.
- 3Upscale in a faithful modeA faithful upscaler adds detail that fits what's there. A creative one invents detail and can change hands, eyes and text, which Adobe refuses in AI images.
- 4Review at 100% zoomCheck faces, hands, edges and flat areas for halos, noise, painted textures and pixelation. A fit-to-screen preview hides most of them.
- 5Go easy on sharpening“Heavily edited or over-sharpened” is a listed refusal reason. Sharpen lightly or not at all after an AI upscale.
- 6Export as a clean sRGB JPEGHigh quality, under 45 MB, no borders or watermarks, with the title and keywords kept in the file.
- 7Label, add metadata and submitTick “Created using generative AI tools”, add a title under 70 characters and your keywords, and send the file for review. See how to upload to Adobe Stock and the Adobe Stock CSV guide.
Why do upscaled images get refused on Adobe Stock?
These are refusal reasons from Adobe's quality pages (consulted October 2, 2026) that a careless upscale can trigger:
| Adobe's wording | What causes it in an upscale | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| “Heavily edited or over-sharpened” | Sharpening on top of an upscaler that already sharpens | Sharpen lightly with a limit, or not at all |
| “Out-of-focus or soft” | Too large a factor on a soft source, or too little detail added | Smallest factor that reaches your target; check at 100% |
| “Jagged edges or pixelated elements” | Stretching an illustration or a diagonal edge | A real upscale, not plain resizing |
| “Artifacts and noise caused by over-editing” | Artificial noise in skies and walls; heavy noise reduction | Look at flat areas at 100% |
| “Colored halos” | Edge contrast and chromatic aberration made stronger | Light sharpening; check high-contrast edges |
| “Unrealistic skin-smoothing” | Too much noise reduction on portraits | Keep pores; add a touch of fine grain if needed |
| “Excessively compressed” | Saving the JPEG at low quality | High quality, full color resolution |
Worked example: 1500 × 1000, from 2x to 4x
The factor squares the pixels, and a crop takes some of them away. Here is a 1500 × 1000 image (1.5 MP) at each factor, then after cropping to 80% of each side (an 80% × 80% crop keeps 64% of the pixels):
| Factor | Result | Megapixels | After an 80% crop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x | 3000 × 2000 | 6.0 MP | 2400 × 1600 (3.84 MP): below 4 MP |
| 3x | 4500 × 3000 | 13.5 MP | 3600 × 2400 (8.64 MP): clears 4 MP |
| 4x | 6000 × 4000 | 24.0 MP | 4800 × 3200 (15.36 MP): clears it, but check at 100% |
That's why we upscale to 3x as a default for stock: it leaves margin for a crop. Nothing here is a rule from Adobe, and no factor guarantees acceptance.
How Stock Creatives handles the upscale for Adobe Stock
Stock Creatives is our product. It upscales your files 2x, 3x or 4x in a default Faithful mode, exports an sRGB JPEG (quality 95) and checks every result for 4–100 MP, 45 MB, fidelity to the original, sharpening halos, artificial noise and lost metadata, marking it OK or Review with the reasons. Each upscale uses credits by scale (4x costs twice as much as 2x); see pricing.
It also writes a title of up to 70 characters and up to 49 keywords and gives you the Adobe Stock CSV, free of credits. Stock Creatives sends your finished images, with title and keywords inside, to your Adobe Stock contributor account, and you submit them for review in Adobe's portal. If you prefer, download the images and the CSV and upload by hand.

Frequently asked questions
How do I upscale an image for Adobe Stock?+
Fix the original, upscale it to roughly 6–16 MP with a faithful upscaler, check it at 100%, export a sRGB JPEG under 45 MB and tick “Created using generative AI tools” when you submit. A 1500 × 1000 image at 3x becomes 4500 × 3000 (13.5 MP).
What size should an upscaled image be for Adobe Stock?+
At least 4 MP and at most 100 MP, according to Adobe's pages. A prudent target for AI images is roughly 6–16 MP, only as large as the image holds up at 100%.
Does Adobe Stock accept upscaled AI images?+
Yes, if they meet its quality standards. Its generative AI FAQ says: “Don't increase resolution in ways that degrade quality.” Acceptance is never guaranteed.
How many megapixels does Adobe Stock require?+
4 megapixels minimum, 100 megapixels maximum, with files up to 45 MB, as of Adobe's pages consulted on October 2, 2026. Details in Adobe Stock minimum resolution.
Is the 6–8 megapixel limit for Adobe Stock still valid?+
No, not as a rule. It comes from Adobe's 2023 guide for AI images. The 2026 technical pages allow up to 100 MP and don't repeat it, so aim for a moderate size the image can support.
Why was my upscaled image refused by Adobe Stock?+
Common reasons are over-sharpening, halos, artificial noise, pixelation, soft focus and, for AI images, anatomical errors and render artifacts. Check the rejection notice and see Adobe Stock rejection reasons.
Do I have to label an upscaled AI image on Adobe Stock?+
Yes. The “Created using generative AI tools” checkbox is required for all generative AI content, and upscaling doesn't change that. See Adobe Stock AI requirements.
Can I try the upscaler before paying?+
Yes. Confirm your email to get 2 images and 2 upscales, with no card needed.
