Free AI image upscaler: what's really free and what isn't

A free AI image upscaler exists, but “free” usually comes with limits. Stock Creatives's free trial gives you 2 images and 2 upscales with no card; after that, upscales come with paid plans. Here is what free tools tend to limit, and when a free one is enough.

The free trial covers the whole path: create, upscale and label

  1. 1Create the image
  2. 2Own upscaler, up to 4x
  3. 3Title + keywords
  4. 4Upload to Adobe
  • 2 images + 2 upscales, free
  • No card to start
  • Title, keywords and CSV don't use credits

After the trial, plans start at €49 a month, excluding VAT. See pricing.

What is free at Stock Creatives, exactly?

Only the trial. When you sign up and confirm your email you get 2 images and 2 upscales to try, with no card. That is enough to see whether the result works for you, not enough to build a catalogue.

After the trial, upscaling is included in the monthly plans (from €49 a month, excluding VAT), and each upscale uses credits by scale: 2x, 3x or 4x, where 4x costs twice as much as 2x. Titles, up to 49 keywords and the Adobe Stock CSV don't use credits. Stock Creatives is our own product, so we'd rather say plainly that it is not a permanently free tool. Details are on the pricing page.

What do free AI image upscalers usually limit?

Limits vary a lot from tool to tool, so we don't quote numbers for other products here. These are the things to check before you rely on a free upscaler for images you plan to sell:

What to checkWhy it matters for stock
Output sizeSome free tiers cap the result. Adobe Stock needs 4 MP or more, and a 2x upscale of a 1 MP image lands at just 4.2 MP.
Number of images or creditsA free tier may give only a handful of images or credits, which is fine for a test and slow for a batch.
WatermarkA watermark makes the file useless for stock. Look at the download, not at the preview.
File format and compressionAdobe Stock asks for JPEG in sRGB and refuses excessively compressed files. Check the format and quality you actually get.
MetadataSome tools strip EXIF, IPTC and XMP, so titles and keywords embedded in the file disappear.
Privacy and retentionWeb tools upload your file. Check how long they keep it and what they do with it.
Commercial useRead the terms: personal-use-only licences are a problem if you sell the image.
Speed and queuesCheck whether free users wait longer than paying ones, which matters when you have a batch.

A verified example: what Nero's free online upscaler offers

Nero's online upscaler at ai.nero.com says it is “free to start”: you “get 10 free Nero Credits when you create an account”, it supports 2×, 4× or 8× up to 32K, takes JPG, PNG, WEBP and AVIF, and deletes files after 24 hours (page consulted October 4, 2026). It does not list the credit cost of each upscale, and to carry on after the free credits you need a paid option.

That pattern, a few free credits and then a paid plan, is the common one. We read more about this tool in Nero AI Image Upscaler and its alternatives.

Which kinds of free AI upscalers exist?

  • Free open-source desktop apps (Upscayl is a well-known one): no subscription and no upload, but the speed depends on your graphics card and they add no stock metadata.
  • Free tiers of web upscalers: quick and need no install, but with limits on size, number of images or watermark-free downloads.
  • Free trials of paid tools: the full tool for a short test, like the Stock Creatives trial.

When is a free upscaler enough, and when isn't it?

Your situationA free upscaler is…
You upscale one or two images a monthUsually enough. Check size, watermark and terms.
You want to test whether upscaling helps an imageEnough. Use any free tier or a trial.
You have a capable graphics card and don't mind a desktop appOften enough, and offline.
You sell on Adobe Stock and upscale batchesRarely enough. You need 4 MP or more, sRGB JPEG, metadata kept and a review at 100% for every image.
You need the title, keywords and CSV for each imageNot enough on its own: that's a second tool.

How to test any free upscaler in five minutes

  1. 1Pick a typical imageAn AI image of about 1 MP, such as 1024 × 1024, with a hand, some text-like detail and a flat background.
  2. 2Upscale it at the largest factor allowedNote the factor and the output size. If it is under 4 MP, it can't go to Adobe Stock.
  3. 3Check for a watermark and the formatDownload it and open the file: JPEG or PNG, sRGB, no watermark. Our image resolution checker shows the exact size.
  4. 4Zoom to 100%Look at hands, edges and flat areas for halos, painted textures and noise.
  5. 5Read the licenceMake sure commercial use is allowed before you sell anything.

What a stock seller gets from the trial

In the Stock Creatives trial you can upscale an image to 2x, 3x or 4x in Faithful mode, which adds detail without redrawing hands, faces or text, and see its OK or Review verdict. If you want to try it on Midjourney files, read how to upscale Midjourney images; for exact sizes, see upscale an image to 4K.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI image upscaler?+

Yes: free open-source desktop apps, free tiers of web tools and free trials. Most limit size, number of images or watermark-free downloads. Stock Creatives has a free trial with 2 images and 2 upscales, no card needed.

Is Stock Creatives free?+

Not beyond the trial. Confirm your email to get 2 images and 2 upscales; after that, upscaling comes with the monthly plans from €49 a month, excluding VAT.

What is the best free AI image upscaler?+

It depends on the use. For free and offline, an open-source desktop app if you have a good graphics card; for the occasional image, a web tool's free tier. We compare them in the best AI image upscalers of 2026 without inventing rankings.

Can I use a free AI upscaler for stock photos?+

Yes, if the result is at least 4 MP, has no watermark, is a clean sRGB JPEG and the terms allow commercial use. For batches, the time spent on checks and metadata is what usually makes a free tool expensive.

Do free upscalers add watermarks?+

Some do on free downloads. Always open the file you download, not the preview, before you use it.

Are free online upscalers safe for my images?+

They upload your file to a server, so check the retention and privacy policy. Nero's online upscaler, for example, says it deletes files after 24 hours. A desktop app keeps the file on your computer.

Is a free upscaler good enough for Adobe Stock?+

Only if it reaches 4 MP or more without halos, noise or painted textures at 100%. Adobe doesn't ban upscaling; it refuses quality loss. See Adobe Stock minimum resolution.
